What are Standard Thermocouple Connectors?

Standard thermocouple connectors are specialized, quick-disconnect fittings that are used to join temperature sensors to instrumentation without introducing measurement errors. They feature polarized pins and bodies made of the same thermocouple-grade alloys as the sensors themselves. The thermocouple connectors are important for maintaining the thermoelectric circuit's integrity to the sensor. The standard thermocouple connectors are available in male plugs or female jacks with the option of high-temperature. In addition, many accessories are included to complete the connection. The standard thermocouple connectors can also be offered in miniature connectors.

Types of Standard Thermocouple Connectors

Eustis/Pyrocom offers many different types of standard thermocouple connectors for matching thermocouple products. The standard thermocouple connectors come with heavy-duty hollow pins that are sized to ensure correct polarity and glass-filled thermoplastic bodies rated up to 392°F (200°C). Many additional components are available to secure the connection.

Standard Male Connectors

Standard male connectors feature two round pins, with the negative pin intentionally larger to ensure polarity. The standard male connectors are available for various thermocouple connections depending on the type. For more extreme temperatures, high-temperature male plugs are utilized that are built with materials for more demanding needs.  All standard male connectors are designed to mate with a standard female connector.

Standard Female Connectors

Standard female connectors are industrial components used to link temperature sensors to extension cables or instrumentation without signal degradation.  The female jacks feature two polarized, round metallic sockets made of exact thermocouple alloys, housed in durable, color-coded plastic. High-temperature female jacks are available for more extreme applications. Female jacks are engineered to mate with male connectors and are intended to be purchased together with the same type of thermocouple connection.

Additional Standard Thermocouple Connectors

In addition to the male plugs and female jacks, Eustis/Pyrocom offers several components for standard thermocouple connections. These components include:

Thermocouple Type Compatibility

Standard thermocouple connectors are designed to match thermocouple types because the metal pins inside act as an extension of the sensor. Connecting to the proper type ensures measurement accuracy and reduces errors. The available thermocouple calibration connectors offered by Eustis/Pyrocom include:
  • Type K
  • Type J
  • Type T
  • Type E
  • Type N
  • Type R/S
  • Type B

How to Choose the Right Standard Thermocouple Connector

To maintain accuracy in temperature measurement, choosing the right standard thermocouple connector is crucial. Using mismatched connectors creates junctions that generate false voltage and results in temperature reading errors. Therefore, several considerations must be taken to ensure the proper standard thermocouple connector is chosen:
  • Thermocouple Type: Determine the sensor type of the thermocouple and choose the connector of that type
  • Temperature Environment: Consider the ambient temperature and choose a connector with the proper body material
  • Connector Housing Material: Find housing materials for connectors in thermoplastic, high-temperature, or environmental durability based on the need
  • Application Requirements: Determine the use of the connectors, such as industrial vs laboratory, frequency of disconnect/reconnect, and exposure to vibration or harsh conditions

Benefits of High-Quality Thermocouple Connectors

Standard thermocouple connectors and choosing the proper type provide many benefits to secure temperature measurement. The thermocouple connectors provide a complete connection in even the toughest of environments. Benefits of standard thermocouple connectors include:
  • Improved measurement reliability
  • Easier maintenance
  • Long service life
  • Better organization
  • Easier identification of thermocouple types
